Tumbling Block Quilt - From a Jelly Roll

Tumbling Block quilts are one of the most recognizable of all quilt designs but making one can be intimidating to many. Using a Jelly Roll precut fabric pack and one contrasting fabric, you will create a tumbling block quilt you will be proud of. You will learn the teacher’s technique for a Y Seam, Setting Triangles and an appliqued edge.

One Jelly Roll pack – pick one with good contracting values: Dark-ish, Medium-ish and Lights.

If you want, you could use fabrics from you stash – be sure to cut a variety into 2 ½” strips.

½ yard for the setting triangles

1 yard for the border but you will not that for the class.

Rotary cutter, 45mm or 60mm size –I prefer the Olfa Ergonomic style and brand

Rotary mat: Mat 18” x 24” recommended – please bring your own, no sharing  My preferred brand is Olfa, the green mats.

Ruler – 4” x 14” is perfect for this project – my preferred brand is Omnigrid.

Sewing machine in good working order – only bring a small “class” machine if you are very comfortable using it – I recommend you bring that machine you do most of your piecing on so you feel confidant while working.

Basic construction thread – 50 wt. cotton

New Sewing machine needle – Size 70 or 80 Microtex

Nice sharp pins like the Clover Glass Head Silk Pins

Seam Guilds from Guildlines4Quilters.

I love these things and I don’t even know the manufacturer  - these are the perfect tool for making the perfect scant ¼” seam allowance and for helping create accurate bias stems. For this technique, if you have a ¼” foot for your machine with the metal guard on the right hand side it will work too.

Spray Sizing – Mary Ellen’s Best Press or the brand at the grocery store but no spray starch

Omnigrid Glow Tape for your ruler,

Flat hard ironing surface for pressing at your station
