Freemotion Quilting for Previous "Learning to Quilt" Students

I want to teach you the free motion quilting skills and designs needed to quilt your own quilts on your domestic machine.  I know many quilters find themselves frozen in fear when it comes to the quilting stage of their projects, so I want to help get you past this fear with skills and designs that will give you the confidence you need to start.

In this class I will bring many samples, so you can see a large variety of quilting designs and show you how they can be incorporated into quilting designs for your own quilts.  We will be sketching many designs, so you will have them handy for your future creations.

We will also cover the tools that will make this stage of your quilt successful; machine options and set up, machine feet, needles, threads, battings and other tools.

Supplies:

-- Small scissors or snips

-- Sewing machine – make sure it has been recently cleaned and the tension is working fine.

-- Darning foot, also called a “free motion quilting” foot or an “embroidery foot”.  If you are not sure if you have the proper fool for your machine, please come in or call well before the class as sometimes it takes a few weeks for the right foot to come in.

-- Thread of your choice.  We will spend time discussing threads and needles, so please bring what you have, and we will learn with them.  When it comes time to work on your actual quilt, I will help you find the perfect thread.

-- Needle: I prefer an 80 Topstitch needle, or a 70 or 80 Microtex Sharps

-- Quilt Gloves and/or LickyGrip

-- A machine extension table.  The bigger your extension the better.  If you can not get an extension table in time, please bring large hard covered books (such as “coffee table” books) that when stacked up, will measure the height of your sewing machine bed.

--Practice square about 18"x18" of muslin or cheap ugly fabric with cotton batting in between.

--Sketch pad and a pencil or pen for drawing designs.

-- 1 or 2 quilt tops you would like some quilting design help with – for this class bring your Learning to Quilt project – by now you should have all the straight lines competed (hopefully) and we will work on the quilting around the applique center.
