T-Shirt Quilt

A T-shirt quilt is a fabulous way to use old t-shirts to make a very strong and sturdy memory quilt.  These quilts are great for the family room couch, dorm room, Stadiums and picnics.  For this quilt we will base everything on a 2” finished square so you can use pre-cut jelly rolls or scrap strips cut from your stash into 2 ½” strips.  The colors are completely up to you but I would recommend collecting the t-shirts then decide on two basic colors that would coordinate with the primary colors of the t-shirts.

12-20 100% cotton t-shirts – the number of t-shirts you use is determined by the size of the shirts and how big you want the finished quilt.  For a quilt using adult size shirt (Men’s Large) you would need about 14 shirts for a double size quilt.

Approximately 5 – 10 yards, 20” wide of a woven fusible interfacing.   Woven  fusible interfacing will work.  It needs to be a woven interfacing to keep the shirts from stretching during construction and to keep them nice after years of washing.  The amount you will need is again determined by the size and quantity of the shirts you choose.

Pre-Cut strips of fabric – cut 2 ½” wide, no more than 18” long.  The number of strips is determined by the size of your quilt.  I recommend starting with at least 70 strips.  If you choose a checkerboard design option, be sure you have a split of the two chosen colorways.
