Home Sweet Home

Best-selling authors Barb Adams and Alma Allen are back, this time with quilts and projects celebrating the home, community and friendships!

The featured quilt has nine blocks reminiscent of early American sampler designs. Two versions of the quilt - one by Barb, one by Alma - are included.  PLUS there are a total of 13 other projects ... other quilts, a table runner, hooked rug and more.  Every page a delight.

Red, Green and Beyond

In this companion book to Quilts in Red and Green, Terry Clothier Thompson and Nancy Hornback celebrate 21st century women using today's new fabrics and 19th century designs.  Here, along with the original photos, designs and history of 1800s quiltmakers, are 11 new quilts, and a look at the quilters' personal methods of sewing appliqued quilts.

Terry and Nancy pay tribute to descendants who have preserved their family-made textiles, stories and ancestors' photographs. They also rejoice in today's quiltmakers' choices of fabrics and sewing methods such as fusible, freezer paper and machine and hand applique.

Borderland in Butternut & Blue

This book, based on The Kansas City Star's 2007 block-of-the-month project, offers a beautiful sampler quilt, as well as other quilts and projects. The patterns relate to stories of women affected by the clashes along the Missouri/Kansas border during this tumultuous time in our nation’s history. The quilt, made in shades of butternut and blue, is reminiscent of the uniforms worn by Civil War soldiers.

Louisa May Alcott: Quilts of Her Life, Her Work, Her Heart

Authored by quilt historian Terry Clothier Thompson, this book looks at the Civil War through the eyes of Louisa May Alcott. Louisa is best known for writing children’s stories and Little Women, but she was also very involved with the anti-slavery movement, rights for women, and served as a Civil War nurse.

The heart of the book is the “Louisa” quilt. In this quilt there are nine “cameo” blocks that tell the story of Louisa and her family’s life in New England. Also, as part of the quilt, there are six pieced blocks from the Civil War era that can be used to make soldiers quilts.

Quilts for Rosie: Paper Piecing Patterns from the '40s

Help yourself to some beautiful quilts – and grab a bit of war-time history, too!

Carolyn McCormick, author of Carolyn's Paper Pieced Garden and Hard Times, Splendid Quilts and inventor of the Add-A-Quarter ruler, creates another stunning paper pieced sampler. Twenty Kansas City Star patterns from the 1940s have been redrafted into 10-inch and 4-inch paper pieced patterns, giving the quilter the choice of a larger quilt or a miniature.

Instructions for projects such as sachets and trinket boxes are also included so the quilter has alternatives for using the blocks. Also included is how quilts were a part of World War II - quilts made by prisoners of war, Service Banners and how the war changed women’s roles.

Golden's Journal: 20 Sampler Blocks Honoring Prairie Farm Life

Join Golden's life on a prairie farm in the early 1900s.  A sampler quilt of 20 blocks, illustrated by diary entries and photos of the lively grandmother of co-author Kaye Spitzli, are the backbone of this book.  The sampler was designed by the three talented quiltmakers who make up Of One Mind, a Eudora, Kansas, quilt company.

Three distinct quilt settings - from simple to challenging - are offered for joining the sampler blocks, along with many other projects, all created from the block patterns.  You'll find clear, concise instructions for putting together a variety of small quilts and other fun projects.

Kansas Spirit: 15 Historical Quilt Blocks & the Saga of the Sunflower State

Kansas Spirit: 15 Historical Quilt Blocks & the Saga of the Sunflower State

Author Jeanne Poore and other past and present members of the Kansas Quilters Organization - they call themselves "Golden Oldies" - pooled their talents to create new and original quilts using classic patterns that evoke the colorful, often turbulent, history of Kansas. Rotary-cut designs interpret the stars of the state flag, windmills from prairie farms, tornadoes, pioneer trails, dugouts and courthouses, flowers, trees and crops, among other images. Includes patterns for 15 blocks in 6- and 12-inch sizes, setting instructions for large and small quilts, additional projects and tips for fabric selection.

Magic Vine Quilt

Grow a flower garden in beautiful fabrics to grace your bed or wall as Eleanor Burns presents Magic Vine.

The patterns for Magic Vine originated in the 1930’s in a newspaper quilt column written by Florence LaGanke Harris. As part of a series, LaGanke presented one new pattern each week. In addition to the pattern, the reader was treated to a fictitious story about a quilt group and their leader, Nancy Page. In the group, they shared stories, and decided on what colors to use for their flowers.

Twenty-two flowers are appliquéd in rows with twinning vines. It is magical because of the variety of flowers that grow on the vine. The vine grows quickly, like the magic vine in Jack and the Beanstalk.

Quick Trips Quilts
by Eleanor Burns

Pack up your sewing machine and take a “Quick Trip” with Eleanor! Quick Trip Quilts is a strip pieced pattern with three layouts. The traditional “Quick Trip” is based on a “Trip Around the World” format. A Bargello effect is achieved with the “Quick Quarter” pattern, and for the artist in you, piece a “Water Lily” which adds a bit of appliqué to a rippling water background. The patterns are easy enough for a beginner but will challenge seasoned quilters to achieve just the perfect effect for an inspiration quilt. Eleanor’s technique for this quilt is fun and so easy that it is truly a “Quilt in a Day.” Let your personality shine through in your quilt by fabric selection and placement. Yardage and cutting charts are included for all five-quilt sizes with bonus instructions to make table runners from your scraps. The book features sample quilts that symbolize locations from the desert to the sea. Take a trip to your sewing room and create your dream vacation with a Quick Trip Quilt!
