Supplies:
"
Sweatshirt -
purchased sweatshirt with set in sleeves at least one size larger for a
jacket style or the size you usually wear. A 100% cotton or preferably at
least 80% cotton works best (I prefer a man’s or unisex sweatshirt
because when a women’s shirt lower band is removed, it can be too short
in length).
"
Or Denim shirt
~ Recycle old denim shirts you or a member of your family no longer wears.
Or purchase one (or some!) at resale shops or garage sales.
Men’s denim shirts are easier to find and work well for anyone.
Try to find one with no pockets or one with just one pocket.
Appliqués
and names can be done by hand or machine for either method you will need
(note I stitched my appliqués by machine and hand embroidered names and
says on the Mom and Grandma shirt and jacket):
"
Fabric for
appliqués 4” x 4” piece for each name 1/8 yards or fat 1/4’s work
well for pieces.
"
Fusible web I
prefer Steam A Seam Lite 1/4 yard for 6 names or fewer 1/2 yard for up to
20 names
"
Marking pen(s)
or pencil(s) for light and dark fabrics needs to wash out or disappear.
"
Appliqué foot
for machine appliqué
Machine methods:
"
Monofilament
for machine appliqués - clear for light fabrics or smoke for dark fabrics
or colors to match your appliqué fabric for either hand or machine.
"
Thread to
match your shirt 50 wt. if attaching by machine.
"
60 wt for
bobbin thread if using satin stitch appliqué. I prefer Bottom Line by
Superior Threads
"
Machine
Embroidery threads color(s) of your choice for machine embroidery
and whatever other
supplies you will need for machine embroidery
"
1/2 yard of
tear away stabilizer for satin stitch machine appliqué
Hand methods:
"
Embroidery
floss or pearl cotton #8 contrasting color(s) for names, sayings appliqués
may be stitched with matching or contrasting colors
Accent
fabrics: 5/8
yard of fabric for binding for sweatshirt jacket or to cover
collar or cuffs and add binding to the bottom of your shirt.
"
