pattern: “Mosaic Focus Quilts” by Carolyn’s Creative Designs
Keep in mind that the focus fabric is cut the length of the fabric so
the size of the quilt determines how much focus fabric you will need.
When
choosing fabrics for this project all of the fabrics you choose need to
accent and make your focus fabric come alive. The way you will know is
if you choose a fabric and the focus goes from the focus fabric to the
pieced blocks or the borders.
If you are not sure of what fabrics to choose just bring your
focus fabric and 3 fat quarters(does not have to go with your focus
fabric it is just for practice) to make the pieced block for the first
session.
You may want to put the pieced columns and focus columns together first
and decide on the width and length of your quilt before you choose the
fabric for the outside border and the flip border(goes down along each
column and around the quilt).
Other
Supplies:
Basic Sewing Supplies, Rotary cutter, Ruler and Mat
Thread— for piecing 50/3 wt. cotton, 40 weight cotton for quilting
Walking foot—optional but very helpful
Yardage Amounts
When
choosing fabrics for this design you will want fabrics for the pieced
columns and border fabrics to make the focus fabric stand out.
Example for both of the cover quilts I tried to use a cream for fabric A
and in both quilts it took away from the focus fabric.
I
have listed options for the following sizes: baby, lap, 2 versions of
twin size, queen and king.
*** Note: the width of fabric will determine how wide your focus columns
can be before you need to purchase double the focus fabric!
The
quilt sizes listed below have the focus column width and borders figured
in the yardage amounts. You may decide to change them if you wish but
you will have to refigure yardage amounts.

Note: the yardage for the Iris quilt is not listed because the designer
felt it should be lengthened to a twin size.
Batting
comes in these sizes crib – 45” x 60” twin - 70” x 90” full
– 81” x 96” queen – 90” x 108” king – 120” x 120”
Purchase a batting that is 2 - 4” wider and 2 - 4” longer than the
finished size of your quilt top.
